A Morning with Marcel and His Dog
At dawn, somewhere between Apt and Bonnieux, a truffle hunter and his dog know something you don't.
Duration
3 hours
Group size
2–6 guests
Season
winter
Location
Luberon
Marcel has been hunting truffles in the Luberon for thirty years. His dog, Pépite, has been doing it for four — which in truffle years, Marcel says, makes her the expert.
You meet at first light, in a clearing Marcel won't name on any map. The oak trees here are his. The silence is something else entirely.
For two hours you follow Pépite through the undergrowth, watching Marcel read the ground the way you'd read a page. When she stops, everyone stops. What happens next is unrepeatable.
Back at the farmhouse, Marcel's wife turns the morning's find into something extraordinary: scrambled eggs, black as the earth they came from, eaten slowly, with bread and a glass of something cold.
What’s included
Private truffle hunt with Marcel and Pépite. Morning breakfast prepared with freshly found truffles. A small jar of preserved truffle to take home. Transfer from Apt available on request.
Your host
Henri Gaillard
Henri has been making wine on this 40-hectare estate in the Luberon since 1987. He speaks little English — and that's exactly why you'll remember this afternoon forever.
“Marcel speaks no English. His wife speaks a little. The truffles speak for themselves.”
